I have known Michael Turnbull for 2 years as a student at the Northern Film School and believe him to have high potential as a director. He has a unique vision rarely encountered at this level, a quiet authority as a filmmaker and a steel determination to tell cinematic stories of emotional truth. Michael is good in a team, self-effacing, nervy to do well. He is absolutely ready to move on to the next level in directing. I cannot recommend him highly enough. Consider him carefully – he is too good to lose.

Laura Angel
Area Operations Manager, Mencap

I am lead coordinator of Mencap’s Spotlight events group. We have been running Mencap’s Got Talent since 2014. This year we decided we wanted to develop the project by organising a boot camp for our acts to attend, polish their performance, gain confidence and meet others. We wanted to document this journey to the stage through a documentary. A colleague gave me Michael’s details and he has accommodated all our requirements from the beginning. It was difficult, having no experience in filming, or a clear directive for Michael as to what we would use the film for. He was great, sharing his ideas and checking with us that it would fit in with our aims. Michael worked well with the people we support to get what he needed. The boot camp film was shown on the night of the event. Michael came and filed the event for us and used the first film along with the new footage to make a different film, documenting the whole process. It looked at the journey of individuals and celebrated their talents. Michael researched learning disability and Mencap and included this into his documentary, which gave the film a depth and meaning. The style off the film has been widely recognised in the organisation. We are using the film for promotion and celebration of best practice. Michael has been positive to work with from the start, and we are hoping to use his services again for future projects.
