Over the last four years, in a professional capacity as senior tutor in film media production design, I have had the pleasure in teaching Richard Wooller. He has many skills to offer, is a mature person and an excellent team player who works well with his fellow peers. Richard has a good questioning mind that seeks out problems and also provides solutions. His technical drawing abilities and the use of sketch up, are of a high standard. He has a good eye for detail, colour and he thinks film. Richard is also very practical with set construction and building skills. I would certainly consider Richard to be included as part of my Art Department whilst working on film projects.
Having worked with Rich on a number of films he has been involved in and guiding him on construction matters I am very happy to write this reference. I have been building sets alongside students at AUB for three years and have known Rich for just over two years. He is certainly one of the students that has stood out to me as having a genuine flare for production design and film in general. In the art department often we work to tight deadlines and encounter unforeseen problems, so at times we have to make it work. Rich excels in this regard, he uses his creativity to overcome issues. A typical example would be stretching a small materials budget by good use of stock scenery and seeing the value in materials others might overlook - he has the ability to make it work. He has also shown himself to be a very organised communicator, demonstrated by his spreadsheets relating to materials, budget and crew availability. I believe cohesion to be essential in any department which requires crew with manners and professionalism. Rich has demonstrated these attributes time and again, but above all he is very willing to learn and will always ask for guidance when he needs it required. Rich is a very capable and creative guy. He was brought back in by AUB after graduating to head up the art department as production designer for the MA course. For this he built a hotel basement set, I watched as much of this set was built and was impressed by the overall result and the way Rich managed the build. I believe the very fact he was brought back in after graduating highlights how valued he is and is of great testament to him. As is his graduation film for which he put in many hours both on location and in the scenic workshop building props. It is also worth noting that once his graduation film had wrapped, he was in the workshop helping out with props for another film - this altruistic approach does not go unnoticed. A super chap to have on set, always chipper, willing to learn and exhibits a genuine interest in film.
