We make sure we are up to date with all the feedback and questions that are floating out there about MFJF, most are genuine questions, some a little less so. Here we list the most frequent concerns that people have about using a MFJF to help them their film careers:
- HOW MANY PEOPLE GET JOBS ON MFJF?
Everyday people find work via MFJF, either by responding to the adverts on the site or by recruiters looking through the Available Crew lists. Often we are not informed if someone is recruited via the site, but later we may receive an email thanking us, sometimes we call companies up and the person answering the phone got the job via MFJF!
The key to finding work is to make sure you are applying to the right role for you. It is essential you read our Career Guides and Career Planners so you understand the role and what is expected of you.
- HOW MANY PEOPLE APPLY TO EACH JOB?
It varies, some jobs are popular and some are not. The average is just under 20 applicants per role. However, sadly, most are speculative applications, and do not meet the criteria for the job. Time and again we say only apply to the jobs that match your skillset and experience, but most ignore that and leave themselves frustrated as they will not hear back from recruiters.
To give you a comparison, applications from adverts on Facebook Groups for instance, can reach over 500 per job!
- WHERE DO ALL THE JOBS COME FROM?
The jobs on our site are either from companies or productions contacting us, because we might have dealt with them before, or via our network of contacts, who alert us to recruiting companies or productions. Everyday we are busy speaking with companies and productions to find out when they will next be looking for junior staff or crew.
We act as the contact and network for those without contacts, in this who you know business, we are here to help.
- BUT ALL THE JOBS ASK FOR EXPERIENCE!
It is crucial you understand the career paths and requirements of candidates to get ahead in this industry. The industry expects a threshold of knowledge and skills, this can seem daunting but it shouldn't as mostly you can achieve all of these things yourself by researching and up skilling in your spare time. Once again, this is detailed in our Career Guides and Career Planners.
- WHY CAN'T I SEE THE NAMES OF COMPANIES AND PRODUCTIONS?
There is a nice and simple answer here, the companies and productions ask us not to! For productions with mega budgets (and equally with smaller ones), they insist all job adverts are anonymous. Their big fear is that people will start calling them directly, and when you are in the midst of filming you don't want any distractions. Likewise for companies, they want to avoid the attention and unsolicited calls. Many of the companies and productions we work with are high profile, so attention will inevitably be drawn to them. Making the adverts anonymous is their means of avoiding this attention.
- ARE THE JOBS REAL?
When jobs are posted anonymously we appreciate there will be frustration, but rest assured, the anonymous jobs are often the most exciting ones! All jobs are vetted on the site, and no one has ever posted a so called fake job. The industry is to small, with reputations too important, for someone to get tarnished with a bad rap. We vet every job to make sure they are from reputable companies and productions so MFJF member have the best possible experiences.
- YOU NEVER HEAR BACK ONCE YOU SEND OFF YOUR CV
This is the most frustrating aspect of the industry. The lack of communication is so annoying! There is simply nothing worse than spending ages on your CV and Cover Letter then sending off to hear nothing back. We work tirelessly to avoid what we call the CV Black Hole, by chasing recruiters for feedback on your behalf. Our aim is get general application feedback for everyone, hopefully confirmation that someone was successful and if we are lucky, to get permission to post their CV to the other applicants so the rest can compare themselves to the successful CV. It doesn't always work, but we strive to get you as much communication on your application as possible. If you ever want an update then you can email us anytime.
